Before you Vote Tomorrow Know What is at Stake on the National Level

Ok, so this is not a technology post, but sometimes even my life ventures from the front of a computer screen. Take a moment to watch the trailer for the movie Obsession. Before you pull the lever on Tuesday for the national candidate of your choice, please consider the direction that your individual vote could steer this country in.

Sunday night I was watching FOX News Channel’s special on radical Islam. My 3-month old son, Jacob was fussy that night, so he was still up and insisted on being held by daddy – constantly. So we watched the special together. As I watched, I found myself wondering if my son would have to deal with this terrorism mess when he grows up.

The special put a lot of things into context for me. It illustrated how all of the situations that we see as separate theaters in the war on terror are seen as a single battlefield to Islamic terrorists. It made clear the parallels between the early 1940s and today. It made clear that radical Islam is not going away on its own, and if allowed to fester it could become the greatest challenge that we, and our children, will face over the next 10-20 years.

Nebraska’s Lee Terry and the Colbert Report

With all of the talk about the bad things you can find on www.youtube.com, I thought I would find something funny and entertaining that would show you how this technology can be used to entertain as well.

The Colbert report is a news-like show on Comedy Central that takes the news of the day and addresses complex issues tongue-in-cheek.

In this episode, Colbert hosts Nebraska District 2 Congressional Representative, Lee Terry. This one is pretty funny, so take a few minutes to have a look!

Great, now I get Political Spam

I just received an email message from someone (supposedly) by the email address of harriet.gunn_aq@prodigy.net. The message in the email was a multi-page tirade about the Iraq war, the evils of America, the corruption of the Bush Administration, and the damage the Freemasons and Zionists have done to the “Citizens of the World.”

I skimmed the message and quickly determined that it was just the usual cook conspiracy garbage – Dick Cheney & Halliburton, economies of the world are ruled by Jewish bankers, and a new one – Did you know that Woodrow Wilson’s presidential campaign was paid for by Rothschild’s? I attempted to reply to the email message, but I was not surprised to find that the email address bounces back as undeliverable.

Of course, the sender of the email message requested that I post the message in my blog and on newsgroups across the Internet so the truth would be available to the “Citizens of the World.” The real purpose is to provide credibility to the numerous links to pseudo-news websites around the world and help elevate their status in search engine results. Its a scam – but a scam with a political purpose.

It is no big secret that I lean to the right politically, but this kind of garbage doesn’t do anyone any good. Remember all of conspiracy theories about Bill Clinton and the Vince Foster suicide? I mean seriously… If you don’t like a guy don’t elect him. Its that simple. If you don’t vote, then don’t complain.

Omaha Public Schools Gets 4 Million in Technology Vouchers from Microsoft

In April of 2005 I brought you a story on our radio show Compute This (Saturdays from 10-11 in Lincoln, NE) about a small Fremont law firm that managed to successfully sue Microsoft for 22.6 million for anti-competitive practices in the state of Nebraska. You can listen to the archived interview here.

Microsoft settled the class action suit and agreed to pay 50% of any unclaimed funds from the settlement in the form of technology vouchers to Nebraska’s public schools. Schools were awarded the vouchers based upon need as measured by participation in the Federal School Lunch Program.

Based on those calculations, the Omaha World Herald reported today that Omaha Public Schools was awarded $4.05 Million after filing some grueling paperwork to prove that they were qualified to receive the funds under the settlement.

On a voice vote today the United States Senate passed the 163-page revision to the Child Protection and Safety Act. The bill would make it a federal crime punishable by up to 20 years in prison to lure minors to a website using words like “furby” or “barbie” that is intended to deliver pornographic images.

This revised version of the House bill is expected to be signed by the President and enjoys bi-partisan support. Among other things, the bill would:

Wine Tasting to Benefit Nebraska Young Republicans

My wife and I had a wonderful time tonight at the Young Republicans wine tasting fundraiser at Coby Mach’s home in Lincoln, Nebraska. Typically there are a million of these things BEFORE an election, so it was nice for a change to come to an event where people were there to relax and interact without agendas.

I did find myself pulled into a business discussion with a couple of people over the competitive nature of the local computer industry. With the recent news about Schrock and the media interest it is generating I suspect many more of these informative discussions will follow in the near future.

Thor Schrock Endorses Stenberg in US Senate Race

People pick political candidates for odd reasons sometimes. In this election, Nebraska politics is really interesting because you have a ton of qualified candidates all from the same party who are vying for the same jobs. In the case of the Nebraska US Senate Race, voters will have an opportunity to select the Republican who will face off against Ben Nelson (D. Neb) in the general election.

I must admit that I had a tough time choosing between Don Stenberg, Pete Rickets, and Dave Kramer. All three have very attractive qualities – Don is an experienced hand at politics and could use that experience for his constituents; Pete is an outsider who has the brains and the connections to get things done without the usual political strings that get attached to a candidate who has to beg for money to run; and Dave has helped countless other candidates get elected over the years and a LOT of people owe him a LOT of favors, which could be called in in the interests of the people.
