Malware Makers Begin Attacking “Under Served” Mac Users

For the past few years Apple has had a heyday with ads proclaiming that Macs are inherently free of viruses and spyware because of the superior software they employ.

And for the past three years on my radio show I have said that the reason Mac users don’t get many viruses is because not many people were using Mac.

After Vista’s shortcomings gave Apple an opening to sell a LOT of Macs and their marketshare broke 10% of users in the US.

With more and more people using Macs, attackers are now realizing that Mac users are a very undeserved population.  Many don’t run any security software at all because they believe they are impervious to attack.

Do Mac Users Need Security Software?

In short, if you plan on doing anything important with your Mac, you need security software.  If you are using a Mac to play games for your 4 year old, then you can probably go without.

Before you pack your student up for college and send that Mac off to class, here is a list of security software providers who have products you can use to protect yourself and your identity.

There should be a campaign like firefox that would sounds like ” convert the world to MAC” . Only then, we users would have all the facilities windows users have.

The appearance of more security products for the Mac platform is a sign that malware threats to the computers have gained prominence. With these new security concerns in mind, MacNewsWorld scouted out available products to address potential security issues for Macintosh users and allow owners to monitor activity and block spyware, viruses and worms.

There is a pretty simple reason why where wasn’t a virus from Mac OS Nine. The hackers had enough heart to not send a virus to someone who was already stuck with a far inferior Operation System. They felt for the poor bastards who had to day in and day out use something that was for one purpose, WORK.

Its one of those things – hackers will always look at the next target once their current one gets smart. I sometimes use a Mac and always try to ensure its protected but your list is really helpful

Thanks for the heads up. The perceived security of macs makes them an easy target. By bragging about that robustness in their ads, they are basically painting a big bullseye on themselves for the hackers. It is basically challenging them straight up saying that their programmers are smarter than hackers. I also agree that their increased popularity definitely draws in the ones making money through spyware & adware.

Almost 5 years later and what happened? A rise of 500% in MacOS malware development
