Windows 7 Will Offer Virtualized XP!

I know some people reading this just said virtu-what?  In English, Microsoft has announced that in Windows 7 you will actually be able to run Windows XP as a program – just like you would run Internet Explorer or Microsoft Word.

The Windows XP Virtualization will be available in Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate only – lower versions will not support the feature.

To use XP Virtualization you will have to download it from the Microsoft website and have a processor that supports virtualization.  Instructions on finding out if your computer will support virtualization, see this post from the ZDNet website.

But before you start popping campaign corks and dig out your old software there are some limitations to the virtualization technology.

Productivity software like old versions of Corel Word Perfect will run in the virtualized XP enviornment, but 3D games like legacy copies of Doom will not.  Additionally, any older software that requires legacy hardware will not work.  Your old analog TV Tuner will have to stay in the scrap heap for now!
