Offering Top Commenter option on your sidebar is a great way to encourage others to comment on your site. However, it is only plays a part towards the whole picture. On my site, I quickly identify some key elements to my readers:

One: What is the site about?
Two: Who visits here?
Three: What are their opinions about the site/content?
Four: How often do they comment/visit?

To achieve this, there are tools, plugins, and manual code I write into my sidebars to give this information up front and quickly.
